If you follow me on Twitter, you read my daily updates from New Orleans during the 5th Anniversary Observance of Hurricane Katrina. I was sent there for a week on assignment for the newspaper I am honored to be a Staff Writer for, The Final Call.
Interestingly, the September 13, 2005 edition of The Final Call marked my first ever cover story. I was a newbie to journalism (still is) and all of a sudden I found myself in the middle of the world's largest catastrophe at that time. So much happened. I really should write a book about that entire experience like my friend and fellow journalist Jordan Flaherty did in his epic release "Floodlines: Community and Resistance from Katrina to the Jena Six". We met one another during mobilization for the Jena Six. His book is excellent and I am mentioned in it as well.
Since 2005 I have been staying consistent on this Katrina news beat in the Gulf Coast and this year has been no different. Who would have thought that I would sneak inside Houston's Astrodome to get interviews with Katrina survivors for that cover story? I never thought I would but the pain of our people was my driving force to get the story however I could.
Five years later the struggle is not over. You can read one of my reports from being on the grounds in New Orleans this past week by clicking http://www.finalcall.com/artman/publish/frontpageFeaturedArticle/article_7238.shtml
Below are some photos from my recent trip to New Orleans that I posted on my Flickr page. Also listen below to the interview I did on Baltimore's Final Call Radio Broadcast on WEAA 89.9FM on August 29, 2010.
