(Blogger's Note: In 2007 my mother, Mavis Jackson, discovered that she has an autoimmune disease called Alopecia Areata. It's a condition that causes the hair to fall out. She is now an active member of the group Bald Girls Do Lunch and its coming to Houston on March 12. This is my mother's personal invitation.)
You may have recently seen an announcement floating around about an upcoming event. This event is being put on by an organization called Bald Girls Do Lunch, and I am posting this message to provide some additional insight about it. This organization was created for women living with Alopecia Areata, which is an autoimmune disorder that causes baldness.
There are many people, men, women and children, who live with this condition, including myself. So in 1995, after living with it most of her life, the founder, Thea Chassin decided to provide this support group specifically for women living with it.
Bald Girls Do Lunch meets in different cities all over the USA and this will be the very first luncheon in Houston, Texas. I have traveled to luncheons in Manhattan, New York (Mavis Meets Manhattan!), Oakbrook, Illinois, where we taped a segment of the Today Show, and Atlanta, Georgia. Finding this support group in 2007 and continuing to have it in my life makes living with this condition a breeze.
Today I am a Bald and Beautiful Sister!
We all need support when experiencing life changing events and losing my hair was truly a life changing event. I want to encourage all women living with Alopecia Areata in the Houston or surrounding areas to go online, RSVP and come out to the luncheon. It will be so much fun, and we will create some very special bonds with each other. It has truly been a blessing in my life and I want to share it with others who need it. Hoping to see you there!
