Seeing things like this warms my heart. Several people sent me this video via Facebook, Twitter and email over the past week. I just had an opportunity to watch it and I think this is a great message coming from the youth about the degrading lyrics we hear constantly in Hip-Hop.
The Baltimore based rap group of young sisters, Watoto From The Nile, respectfully calls out popular rapper Lil Wayne in this seven minute Youtube video titled "A Letter to Lil Wayne." The members of the group are 10-year-old Nia, 9-year-old Nya, and 5-year-old Kamaria. The song was recorded over Lil' Wayne’s track “I’m Single” because “he talks about drugs, is disrespectful, and calls women out of their name," says the little girls in the video.
“I hear you got a little girl. Does she get the same referral you call the world. Not trying to lean. I hope you call her little queen,” the girls ask in one part of the song.
Unsurprisingly, their father and producer Jabari Natur, said in a recent interview that his daughter received "hate mail" for making this song. Even some of the 8,000+ comments on YouTube are attacks against these young girls. Are you serious? In another part of the song the girls say to Lil' Wayne “You lack the knowledge, information, inspiration and your single…and then you start cursing, they make it even worse when they play it on the radio.”
This reminds me of last year when Jasmine Mans went at Nicki Minaj in her poem “The Mis-Education of a Barbie" and when Dee-1 of New Orleans delivered a message to "Jay, 50, and Weezy." Just like Watoto From The Nile, they went at specific persons and rightfully so. We need to grow beyond calling people "haters" when their giving honest, helpful critique. If you're spreading a negative, degrading and filthy message in your music, then Jasmine's poem and this letter to Lil Wayne is for you too.
As of today, I have not heard of a response from Lil' Wayne to Watoto From The Nile and I don't expect him too. Watoto From The Nile means "children from the Nile in Swahili." With nearly one million views, its safe to say that the young queens have spoken.
