Chicago town hall meeting called to save the Harold Washington Cultural Center

Minister Louis Farrakhan keynotes town hall meeting
to save the Harold Washington Cultural Center

CHICAGO, IL--In response to a call for support by former Alderman Dorothy Tillman, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan will be the keynote speaker during a town hall meeting on Wednesday June 8, 2011, at the Harold Washington Cultural Center (“HWCC”), 4701 S. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Chicago, Illinois at 7:00 p.m. This meeting is regarding the state of the Harold Washington Cultural Center and City Colleges’ attempt to takeover the building.

City Colleges does not own, manage, or operate The Harold Washington Cultural Center. In January of this year, City Colleges acquired the mortgage on the Harold Washington Cultural Center from Urban Partnership Bank and is attempting to unjustly foreclose on the loan. Recently, City Colleges and/or its agents have used intimidation tactics in an effort to disrupt activities at the Harold Washington Cultural Center by coming onto the property all hours of the day and night. City Colleges has been admonished to not trespass on the property.

Learn more this Wednesday about the status of the foreclosure proceedings and the significance of saving this landmark as a tribute to Harold Washington’s legacy. There will be an update from The Law Offices of Power & Dixon, the legal team representing the Harold Washington Cultural Center. Power & Dixon is headed by Atty. Berve Power. Many community and religious leaders are expected to attend to show their support.

The HWCC is owned, managed, and operated by Tobacco Road, Incorporated a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
