(PHOTOS) The Purpose-Driven Mindset: Kicking off the speaking tour at Carter G. Woodson Leadership Academy

My 2011-2012 speaking tour inside schools officially kicked off on September 13 with an appearance at Carter G. Woodson K-8 Leadership Academy in Houston. This year, they launched their Leader Ambassadors program to bring in mentors to speak on a monthly basis to the students during their homeroom class. The goal of the program is to prepare students for a world of opportunities. Of course I volunteered when I was called.

I was assigned to Ms. Berger's 8th grade class. My opening subject was "The Purpose-Driven Mindset" and each session will be 30 minutes. I asked them first what they wanted to achieve when they got older and many of them stated NBA player, doctor, lawyer, mechanic, singer and others "I don't know." I then spoke to them about their uniqueness and how we're all created unlike any other person on the planet. Therefore, I told them that they should not be trying so hard to be like someone else they see on T.V., but rather embrace their own self.

We had a wonderful introductory session. I was originally scheduled just to come once a month but the students requested that I come back more than that. Can't deny them, so I plan to do so. In an email following my presentation, Ms. Berger said "Thank you so much for coming in to talk to the class today- after you left, the kids were all talking about how excited they are for you to come back! I look forward to working with you for the rest of the year!"

Great way to kick off the school year and I'm very excited about speaking to a lot of the young students around the city and country. You can check my upcoming speaking schedule here. If you or someone you know is in need of a speaker that's eager to serve, don't hesitate to email me a request to jesse.muhammad@gmail.com.

  1. This is great! I am going to be a teacher at Woodson next year, so I am excited to see partnerships such as this one!
