Nia is correct. Yes you have the exceptions as mentioned in earlier comments, but Beyonce is no actress by a long shot. She is a heck of an entertainer but she needs to leave acting alone.

What about rappers/singers who do a pretty good job ? Queen Latifah, Will Smith (with whom Nia Long starred with in Made in America), LL Cool J, and to a lesser extent Ice Cube and Ice T. These three off the top seem to do a pretty good job. Latifah and Smith have done awarded nominated work. LL Cool J, Cube and Ice T don't embarass the acting craft in their roles and have proven to be servicable actors. Nia Long is right to a point. I also feel that Nia Long may be being blacklisted as she has been very vocal in her status and lack of work as an actress. Nia Long SHOULD be getting more work as she is gorgeous, intellegent and put in her work to a point to where she should be able to have steady work. I wouldn't solely blame young rappers and singers, but the business as a whole. It's a shame we don't see more of Vivica Fox, Nia Long, Lela Rechon or that accomplished actors ie' Scott Lawrence late of JAG playing Postman # 3 in an non-speaking USPS commercial. Nia is correct. I believe you should stick to acting if you act. Simple because, it's tough for blacks in the movie industry and I'm speaking about our Top rated brothers and sisters. I read that Isaiah Washington-I believe from Grey's Anatomy-is struggling to make his mortgage payment because there's very little work offered to top black actors. If you can act sing, dance or rap and you can sell a million copies of whatever, then you can bump off that brother/sister who has putin work...

Obsessed would have been better with someone else. Beyonce is a horrible actress! Every single movie she's been in, she's been terrible. She really needs to stick to singing and dancing. You can't have everything.

I personally hate singers and rappers in movies.. not because they are not actors, its because they usually suck and screw up an otherwise good movie. That strategy to use people with a brand name is only for the purpose of revenue. By the same token, we've seen numerous rappers who've made great actors; Will Smith, Queen Latifah, Ice Cube, 2Pac (my guilty pleasure is watching 50's "Curly Series"--with some acting classes...)

As for the pitting Nia against Beyonce, she certainly fell for that trap, but she needed to express her truth. I think she could've answered it more tacticly, but at least the dialogue will continue and be amplified.

I think she was just addressing the situation in general but the magazine's question stirred up what I see as frustration on the part of Nia who undoubtedly has been going through much as a Black woman in Hollywood.

Yes I agree that this may have been a tactic too but however Nia Long is speaking truth. But it's just not the movie industry....too many of us think we can JUST jump into any industry when we get inspired but won't but in the work to be the best. I think money has corrupted the art....Just like she mentioned Jamie Foxx as a good example of someone who takes it seriously, I think Puff Daddy puts in work.

Of course it "may have been a tactic ...to pit Nia Long against Beyonce" - this is the magazine business, and they (publishers)are there to make money. And what would sell magazines more than a sensational headline claiming that one big star is trashing another? That being said, Nia is entirely right. There is such a lack of respect for the art and craft of acting (and some would argue, the art and craft of virtually everything else) that people have become accustomed to crap. We mistake a little melismatic singing for high art, we can no longer recognize a good singer from a bad, or a good actress from a bad. And for those of yu who don't know - Beyonce is a bad actress. She needs to stay where her strength is (singing), because acting is definitely NOT her forte.
